Mount Ngungun: Discover Stunning Views and Scenic Trails

Mount Ngungun, located on Australia's gorgeous Sunshine Coast, is a very popular hiking destination that offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for outdoor enthusiasts.

Standing at 253 meters (830 feet) tall, this ancient volcanic dome is part of the Glass House Mountains National Park, a group of thirteen hills and mountains that rise abruptly from the surrounding landscape.

The Mount Ngungun hiking trail is a 2.8-kilometer (1.7-mile) return journey that can take around 1-2 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level and the time you spend admiring the views from the summit. The trail is well-maintained and clearly marked, making it easy to navigate.

As you begin your hike, you'll find yourself immersed in a picturesque forest setting, surrounded by towering eucalyptus trees and diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for colourful bird species, such as cockatoos and lorikeets, as well as wallabies and goannas that call this area home.

As you progress along the trail, the path becomes steeper, particularly in the second half of the ascent. Some sections can be quite challenging, with rocky outcrops and steps to navigate. It's essential to wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

If you have dodgy knees, you might want to avoid the second half of this hike. It just gets more difficult the higher you climb. I suggest going as far as the cave (it will be on your right as you climb) and turning back there if you are feeling puffed or that your knees, etc won't be right if you continue.

Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking, nearly 360-degree views of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. On a clear day, you can see the other Glass House Mountains, the Sunshine Coast coastline, and even as far as Moreton Island and perhaps Brisbane- although I just might have wishful thinking on that one ;)

Take some time to appreciate the panoramic vistas, eat a snack, hydrate and remember to take a few photos to document your achievement for later.

It's important to note that the summit of Mount Ngungun is quite exposed, with minimal shade available. Be sure to wear sun protection, including a hat and sunscreen, and carry plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during the warmer months. Pack some snacks to enjoy at the top while you take in the views.

While the Mount Ngungun hike is suitable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness, it's crucial to take your time and listen to your body. Rest when needed, and don't push yourself beyond your limits. If you're hiking on a rainy day, exercise extra caution, as some sections of the trail can become slippery when wet.

The best time to tackle the Mount Ngungun hike is early in the morning on a clear day. Not only will you avoid the heat, but you'll also have a better chance of enjoying the summit with fewer crowds.

Try to time it so that you aren't climbing on a weekend or during school holidays. This is an extremely popular hike and it gets very busy at times.

Some people aren't as into the quiet of nature and can be loud. We have even experienced people walking and playing music loudly on phones (not wearing headphones) whilst yelling to others in their group. Not the peaceful hike we came for, unfortunately.
