Australian Coffee Culture

Does Australia have a coffee culture? You bet we do! Aussies are downright passionate about their coffee, and we're a bit picky when it comes to our brew. The best part? We've got coffee spots to suit every fancy, from cozy little nooks to the big-name chains.

A short history lesson for you: Aussie coffee culture kicked off with a bang after World War II, thanks to those Italian legends who brought their espresso machines with them. Those little shots of espresso caught on like wildfire, and today, Australia's coffee game is as strong as it gets. We're talking about some of the best coffee culture you'll find anywhere in the world!

What to order

If you're new to ordering coffee in Australia, let's get you started with some helpful tips and a rundown of the most common orders, complete with what's in each cup.

To begin, let's tackle the important question: What should you order? I've got you covered with a concise list tailored for newcomers. And as you become more accustomed to the Australian coffee scene and feel adventurous, I'll introduce you to some delightful specialty options to explore.

  • Short Black- an espresso shot
  • Long Black- a double shot of espresso with hot water. Probably the closest coffee to what you might have in a cafe in North America. This can also be ordered as an Americano, but not all baristas will know what you mean. It's easier just to order a long black
  • Flat White- similar to a latte but with microfoam
  • Latte- a single shot of espresso with steamed milk and a small amount of froth
  • Cappuccino- a single shot of espresso with steamed milk, froth, and chocolate powder or cinnamon
  • Mocha- hot chocolate with an espresso shot

When you are ready to branch out a bit we have:

Specialty Coffees!

  • Piccolo-a shot of espresso and steamed milk. This is a small coffee that delivers a bit of a punch. Perfect for those who love the rich flavour of espresso in a concentrated serving. Not for beginners!
  • Affogato- Espresso and vanilla ice cream mixed together. Sounds awesome because it is. Simply pour the hot espresso over the scoop of ice cream and enjoy. An indulgent dessert and coffee experience rolled into one. Savour this one slowly.
  • Cold brew- Coarsely ground coffee, cold water. Served over ice or diluted with water or milk. Sweetners can be added to customize further. Common ones are sugar, or syrups such as vanilla or caramel.
  • Dirty Chai- Chai tea (milk based) with a shot of espresso. Usually topped with cinnamon sugar or more chai powder
  • Babycino- frothed milk with a sprinkle of chocolate powder on top. Usually served with a marshmallow or cookie on the side. This is a popular drink for children

How to order

Takeaway vs. Dine-in: It's common to specify whether you want your coffee to take away (to-go) or to enjoy in the cafe. "Takeaway" is the term used for to-go orders. It is more common to order for dine-in. We like to have a catch up with our friends over a coffee and enjoy the moment and time together. Or, simply stop and enjoy the gorgeous views! It's not all rush, rush, rush here on the coast (or most of the country, for that matter!)

Size: Most cafes only offer 2 sizes- Regular or Large.

Strength of Coffee: Choose how many espresso shots you want. If you don't specify and no one asks, you will get a regular. Ask for "weak," "regular," or "strong." As a note, more shots cost extra

Milk Choices: You will most often be asked if you want full fat or skim milk.  Soy, oat, almond milk, and lactose-free are other popular options. Specialty milks do normally cost extra. Normally between .70-.90 cents.

Customization: We like to customize our coffee. You might hear requests like "extra shot," "extra hot," or "decaf."

Sugar: You can choose how much sugar you want, if any at all. It's common to say things like: "no sugar," "a little sugar," or "two sugars."

Toppings and Extras: Questions about adding extras like chocolate powder, cinnamon, or whipped cream are common. If you don't want any, simply tell your barista "none, thanks".

Coffee Temperature: Some may ask for their coffee to be "extra hot" or "warm, not hot," depending on their preference.

How to Pay & How long to stay

Payment Methods: Some cafes in Australia may have specific payment methods or accept various payment apps. It is very, very common to pay by "tap" here. We simply tap our debit card, phone, or smart watch to pay. Cash isn't as common, but can be used pretty much everywhere.

It's normal to pay at the counter when you order. You will then be given a table number or be asked which table you are at. You can then stay as long as you like. No one will ever, ever ask you to leave a cafe or order something more. Even at closing time, staff often wait for the final customers to leave. Please mind the times though, cafes close earlier here. Most often between 1 and 3PM

No Coffee Creamers, No Problem: Discover the Pure Joy of Australian Coffee

When you step into a cafe in Australia, you'll quickly notice something missing from the menu that's common in many other countries: coffee creamers or whitening agents. In the land Down Under, these additives simply don't exist in the world of coffee. Why? Because the coffee here is so darn good, it doesn't need any help!

Why No Coffee Creamers?

Australians take their coffee seriously, and our baristas are masters at crafting the perfect cup. The beans are carefully selected, roasted to perfection, and expertly brewed to extract the finest flavors. The result? A coffee experience that's so rich, so flavorful, and so satisfying that adding creamers or whiteners would be like putting ketchup on a gourmet steak – unnecessary and sacrilegious!

A World of Coffee Flavours

In Australia, coffee is more than just a caffeine fix; it's an art form. From the strong and aromatic Short Black to the velvety smoothness of a Flat White, each cup is a journey of taste and aroma. With such a wide range of coffee styles, you can savor the pure essence of the coffee bean itself, unmasked by artificial additives.

Give It a Try!

So, why not take a leap of faith and savor the unadulterated goodness of Australian coffee? Let your taste buds dance to the pure symphony of flavours. Whether you prefer a strong and bold espresso or a silky, creamy latte, you'll find that the coffee here speaks for itself.

The absence of coffee creamers is a testament to the quality of Australian coffee. It's a culture that celebrates the bean in its purest form, and once you've experienced it, you might never want to go back to those artificial additives. So, next time you're in the Sunshine Coast or anywhere else in Australia, give your taste buds a treat they won't forget – a cup of some of the best coffee in the world, just the way nature intended it. ☕🇦🇺
